Our Story

Where Tradition Meets
Contemporary Vision

Yogyakarta is a city rich in culture, one of which is the traditional Indonesian textile heritage known as wastra nusantara, particularly lurik woven fabric that is handcrafted by skilled artisans using traditional techniques.

In 2011, driven by a deep love for preserving local culture, KaLu began its journey to elevate lurik woven fabric into a variety of creative products. These include ready-to-wear woven clothing, crafts, and souvenirs designed to enhance the global image of lurik textiles.

By collaborating with local artisans in Yogyakarta—ranging from weavers and woven box craftsmen to tailors—we are passionate about contributing to community empowerment through textile craftsmanship. Beyond promoting culture in both local and international markets, this initiative has created a positive social impact by improving the welfare and income of the artisans involved.

The National Movement “Bangga Buatan Indonesia” (Proudly Made in Indonesia) has encouraged local products to compete once again by offering the highest quality. KaLu remains committed to maintaining excellent standards and preserving the trust of all TemanKalu by consistently delivering high-quality handmade products.

The Craft

Meticulous
Artisanship

01

Pattern Design

Every motif is hand-sketched, blending traditional symbols with modern geometry.

02

Wax Application

Using the 'canting', artisans apply hot wax to the fabric to resist the dye.

03

Natural Dyeing

We use organic dyes derived from plants, roots, and minerals for rich, earthy tones.

04

Finishing

The fabric is boiled to remove wax and then meticulously tailored into art.
